Mixed Media - Sculpture

I’m increasingly interested in “off-the-wall” and freestanding pieces that are random, irregular and imperfect. The first series is playful and colorful. The bases are cardboard boxes that have been crushed, then coated with rich, luminous wax-based paint. Others have been coated with rust to suggest debris you might find alongside the road. The One That Got Away is a large, multi-component piece with crushed cardboard as the base coated with oil stick. The components go together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The Spirit Figures that complete this section are made with a number of materials, combining foam, rust, wood and wax-based paint. The series is quite large and took several years to complete. The work was inspired by my interest in indigenous cultures in the Southwest. I consider these pieces to be spirit figures.
